VietEcho World News | October 23, 2026 — Typhoon Champi is disrupting flights across Taiwan and Japan, while U.S. and Japanese forces have modified portions of a major joint military exercise as the powerful storm approaches the region.

Flight disruptions expanded sharply in Taiwan between Thursday and Friday. A Reuters update on Friday reported that Taiwan had canceled 262 domestic flights and more than 350 international flights, as authorities took precautions against heavy rainfall, hazardous seas and strong winds. These counts are a snapshot of the developing situation and may change.

Powerful storm brings heavy rain and dangerous seas

Champi reached super-typhoon strength earlier in its development before weakening. Even without a forecast direct landfall on Taiwan, its broad wind field threatens much of the island. Weather officials have warned of intense downpours, particularly in mountainous areas, and dangerous coastal conditions.

The storm has prompted authorities to advise residents to stay away from exposed coastlines and mountain areas. Its projected path takes it near northeastern Taiwan and toward islands in Japan’s southwest, where travel and other activities are also affected.

Airlines cancel flights in Taiwan and Japan

The weather has forced extensive changes in airline schedules. Taiwan’s latest reported cancellations include both domestic and international services. Japanese carriers, including Japan Airlines, ANA and Skymark, also announced cancellations affecting thousands of travelers over several days, according to earlier Reuters reporting.

Passengers flying to or from Taiwan, Okinawa or nearby destinations should check their airline’s official website or mobile app before leaving for the airport. Depending on the carrier and ticket, rebooking or refund arrangements may be available.

U.S.–Japan Keen Sword exercise adjusted

Champi has also affected Keen Sword, a large military exercise involving U.S. and Japanese forces and participants from partner countries. The exercise includes coordinated operations across land, sea and air near Japanese islands, including areas close to Taiwan.

Military officials said training activities were being adjusted as conditions developed to protect participants. The changes reflect the practical challenges of conducting aviation, maritime and amphibious operations during dangerous weather; they do not necessarily mean the entire exercise has been canceled.

What travelers and residents should watch next

  • Flight status: Cancellations and rescheduled departures may change as the storm moves.
  • Coastal hazards: High waves and strong winds can make shorelines and ports unsafe even without direct landfall.
  • Heavy rainfall: Mountain communities may face flooding and landslide risks.
  • Official instructions: Follow local weather advisories, transport updates and evacuation guidance if issued.

VietEcho will continue to follow the regional disruptions. Flight figures in this article reflect reports available on October 23, 2026, and are not a live count.
