Expanded FTC settlement means more Prime subscribers will receive automatic payments — and no claim form is required
Millions of Amazon Prime customers could soon receive money back as federal regulators expand a massive consumer refund program tied to Amazon’s Prime subscription practices.
The Federal Trade Commission announced in September 2026 that a federal court approved changes to the $2.5 billion settlement reached with Amazon in 2025. The revised order expands the number of Prime customers eligible for automatic refunds and increases the maximum total payment an eligible consumer may receive from $51 to $200. (Federal Trade Commission)
For many consumers, perhaps the most welcome part is this: there is no new claim form to fill out.
Amazon is required to automatically send payments to eligible customers identified through its records. Refunds may arrive electronically through PayPal or Venmo, or as a check in the mail. (Federal Trade Commission)
Who May Qualify?
Under the revised settlement, consumers generally must meet three requirements:
- They were an Amazon Prime customer in the United States.
- Between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, they either enrolled in Prime through one of the enrollment processes challenged by the FTC or tried unsuccessfully to cancel Prime through Amazon’s online cancellation process.
- They used no more than 20 Prime benefits during any 12-month period following enrollment.
Prime benefits counted under the settlement can include services such as Prime Video and Prime Music that were provided as part of a Prime membership. (Federal Trade Commission)
The expansion is important because an earlier stage of the refund program primarily provided automatic payments of up to $51 to qualifying consumers with relatively little Prime usage. The new court order brings additional customers into the automatic-payment process, including qualifying consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during a 12-month period. (Federal Trade Commission)
New Automatic Payments Begin October 1
Beginning October 1, 2026, the settlement administrator is scheduled to start issuing payments to this newly expanded group of eligible consumers.
Consumers receiving these payments will have at least 60 days to accept them, so anyone receiving an electronic payment notice should not simply ignore it. (Federal Trade Commission)
According to the FTC, Amazon had already distributed more than $845 million in consumer refunds by September 2026. The original settlement requires as much as $1.5 billion in consumer redress, in addition to a $1 billion civil penalty. (Federal Trade Commission)
Could You Really Receive $200?
Yes — but $200 is the maximum total payment, not a guaranteed $200 check for every eligible customer.
Earlier settlement payments were capped at $51. Under the revised order, some consumers who previously received settlement money could eventually receive an additional payment of as much as $149, bringing their combined payment to a maximum of $200.
The additional payments depend on how much of the required consumer fund has been successfully distributed. If accepted consumer payments have not reached the required level after the current distribution process, additional automatic payments are scheduled, with the final supplemental round beginning by April 2027. (Federal Trade Commission)
So consumers who already received a Prime settlement refund should not assume that their payment was necessarily the last one.
Why Is Amazon Paying Customers?
The case dates back to an FTC lawsuit accusing Amazon of enrolling consumers in Prime without adequate consent and making the subscription unnecessarily difficult to cancel.
The FTC alleged that Amazon used online design techniques sometimes called “dark patterns” to encourage consumers to enroll in automatically renewing Prime subscriptions and created obstacles for customers attempting to cancel. (Federal Trade Commission)
Amazon settled the case in September 2025. The agreement included up to $1.5 billion in refunds for consumers and a $1 billion civil penalty.
The current announcement does not represent another $2.5 billion settlement. Instead, the new court order changes how the remaining consumer-refund money from the existing settlement will be distributed, allowing more eligible consumers to receive payments automatically. (Federal Trade Commission)
Consumers Do Not Need to Pay Anyone
The large refund program also creates an opportunity for scammers.
The FTC has issued an important warning: the agency is not calling consumers about these Amazon refunds.
Consumers should not pay anyone who claims they can obtain or speed up an Amazon settlement payment. The FTC also warns people not to provide personal information to callers or messages promising access to a refund.
Amazon will never require consumers to pay money in order to receive their settlement refund. (Federal Trade Commission)
What Should Prime Customers Do?
For most eligible consumers, the answer is surprisingly simple: nothing.
There is no new application, claim form or paperwork required for the expanded automatic-payment program.
However, consumers should watch their email, PayPal and Venmo accounts and regular mail because settlement payments can arrive electronically or by check. Payments expire 60 days after issuance, according to the FTC, so eligible recipients should accept or deposit them promptly. (Federal Trade Commission)
Consumers who believe they may qualify can verify the requirements through the Federal Trade Commission’s official Amazon refund information page rather than relying on unsolicited emails, text messages or phone calls.
A Significant Consumer Refund Program
The expanded payment program could put money back into the hands of millions of additional Prime customers who were not included in earlier automatic refund rounds.
For qualifying consumers, the change could mean anything from a first automatic refund to an additional payment that raises their total compensation to as much as $200.
And unlike many class-action or consumer settlements that require people to locate a notice, complete paperwork and submit a claim before a deadline, this program is designed to automatically identify and pay eligible consumers using Amazon’s existing records.
With additional automatic payments beginning October 1 and the refund process continuing through April 2027, former and current Prime customers who meet the eligibility requirements should keep an eye on their electronic-payment accounts and their mail.
Most importantly: you don’t have to pay anyone to receive this refund.
